Any 90's kids out there?!?! If you're childhood was anything like mine, you spent every Friday night glued to the television watching TGIF! Shows like Full House" & "Step By Step" were what our '90s sitcom dreams were made of.
Then who remembers 7th Heaven? Ahhhhhhh!!!!!! Felling nostalgic yet?!
What if I told you Pop’s newest original comedy series HOLLYWOOD DARLINGS, which premieres Wednesday, April 12th at 8pm, actually features a few of our favorite 90's actresses such as Jodie Sweetin (Full(er) House), Beverley Mitchell (7th Heaven) AND Christine Lakin (Step by Step)!!!! Yes, you read that correctly, this is real life folks. The even cooler part about this, well at least for me, is that I GOT TO INTERVIEW ALL THREE OF THEM LAST FRIDAY!!!!
Before I jump into the highlights of my exclusive interview, a little background on Pop's latest show!
The girls (Jodie, Beverly & Christen) are now grown ladies, wives, and MOMS!!!! That is right! Step in to the exagerated comedy of their actual real lives as they navigate the sisterhood and friendships they have held so closely to since their childhood. Growing up as child celebrities brought them together but the bond they have, made them best friends and sisters in this crazy world! You will also catch a few other 90's favorite celebs throughout the season such as Moon Frye (“Punky Brewster”), Andrew Keegan (“10 Things I Hate About You”), Tamera Mowry (“Sister, Sister”), Lance Bass(NSYNC), Andrea Barber (“Full House”), Nicholle Tom (“The Nanny”), Heather Tom (“Y&R”),Patrick Duffy (“Dallas,” “Step By Step”), Staci Keanan (“Step By Step”) and Wanya Morris(Boyz II Men)!
Question ~ This an unscripted- not a reality show. What can you tell me about that and what can viewers expect?
Christine: Yeah, this is what we call an improvised comedy and you know, it’s a little tough to explain because there hasn’t been many of them done. This show came about when Jodie, myself and Beverley were all approached by our executive producer Jimmy Foxx who wanted to put together sort of like, a 90’s dream-team of women he grew up with on TV who you know, felt like he maybe had a crush on. Or you know, who felt like, kind of like you- we were like friends to people as we grew up and well he approached the three of us, and we said, “Well you know we’re actually friends in real life,” and that kinda like, blew his mind, the fact that we knew each other. So we sorta’ started talking and none of us were interested in reality but we thought, what if we did a show where we heightened our personality traits and we took kernels of our real life and we expanded those into episode ideas and story-line ideas. And that’s kinda’ how this show was born. There’s an episode, for instance, about a mini-van and it’s all sort of inspired by Jodie actually getting a mini-van in real-life.
Beverly: All of the scenes and everything you see we had story-lines laid out, we prepped with our show-runners like three or four weeks beforehand, we answered these six-page questionnaires about who we were, what we liked, what we didn’t like, what we knew about each other, what we didn’t know about each other. And we took all those little pieces of information and created some very rough story-lines and then within those stories, we kind of knew where we wanted to go from point A to point B. But how we got there, the lines, the dialogue, the interactions between all of us, that was completely unscripted and totally on the fly. So everything you see in the show is us just playing and having fun with a very rough outline of what we wanted to do.
QUESTION ~ How was life growing up, being on TV with Full House, Seventh Heaven and Step by Step, and how did it affect your personal life outside of being actresses?
Beverly: Well it’s- that’s always an interesting question because we don’t really know what life would be like to grow up any other way. Um, so for us that is our normal, that is our everyday um, yes there were unique uh, attributes to growing up in front of uh, the camera. Um, you know, there are things that we didn’t do um, like go to summer- Dance and field trips? And- Yeah, sleep-away camp- Um, but you know, I think we’re all very grateful for the opportunities we’ve been awarded and um, we’ve- you know I think we’ve survived very well um- But I mean, I think I was d- definitely sheltered, I didn’t get- go on as many dates but to be honest, I don’t think I would’ve even if I was in high-school. I just think I was that odd- odd- odd girl-friend that nobody wanted to date, until I met my husband, thank God! Thank God for college-
Christine: But- yeah, like I- you know, I went back and forth being from Atlanta. So I would come out to LA and I would film a show and I would go back to a quote, unquote, normal high-school in Atlanta. And I- so I feel like I kinda’ got the best of both worlds but you know, we make fun of that in a- in a couple of episodes about cashing in on the things we never got to do with kids and trying to relive those moments, and there’s definitely a shared history to the three of us, um, because when you grow up in such unique way I think it will always bond you and it will always shape your uh, perspective about life and I think that’s what’s so cool about our friendship.
QUESTION ~ What did you guys bring to the show about yourselves, and what did you exaggerate to make the show more funny?
Jodie: Well I think because we play heightened versions of ourselves, we all have these little kernels and pieces that we play. My character is definitely more cynical and- and dark than I am in real life. I have a pretty positive outlook on things and motherhood but we really wanted to play it sort of the contrast between myself and Beverly and Christine. That’s definitely an exaggerated piece of who I am. I am quick to poke fun at my friends with the utmost love and make fun of myself and that’s something that’s pretty true to who I actually am.
Christine: Yeah, I’m kind of the ‘hippie dippy’ one of the group, I’m sort of a free spirit. I definitely have those qualities in real life but we exaggerated them for the show for the purposes of comedy, of course. So I’m kind of the lovable fool that will go out on a limb and make these two crazy in their own respective ways. Beverly: And I was the Type ‘A’- the ever-organized, the label-queen and the girl who is prepared for any apocalypse and any ailment that may come your way. I think we played that up a little bit further. I would like to think that I am not as uptight and tightly wound as I play on the show. I do know how to relax and take a break. However I just got my first manicure and pedicure in four years and that is because I didn’t want Jodie to see my toes. Jodie: Yeah I didn’t let her live that one down. Beverly: I’m still paying for that.
Question ~All three of you have such different but complimentary personalities, how did you three actually become friends?
Beverley: Well it goes back several decades- where shall we begin?
Jodie: I was four, it was my first commercial, it was an Oscar Meyer hot dog commercial and Beverley was doing the same commercial. They used to hire a bunch of kids to do kind of the same commercial, I was four, she was five and that’s how Beverly and I met. We would always be up against each other for the same auditions ‘cause we were blonde you know, with little curly hair and lisps. Beverley: Precocious young children- Jodie: Yes Beverley: At the age of four and five. Christine: Beverly and I have known each other forever, and then Jodie and I met when I came out to LA to screen-test for Step by Step and I was lucky enough to do a set-visit to Full House which kind of made my life! If you wanna’ troll my Instagram I posted a throwback of the first time I met Jodie and you can just see. I have a double-chin and I’m just smiling wider than a hyena, I’m so excited. But that’s how we first met, then over the years you know, after I got Step by Step, I just thought, “Oh my God!” Like, “Where do I go from here? I’ve just made it!” I mean, I was on a night show with people I was a fan of. So you have to understand it’s a very surreal experience and then I ended up doing a guest-star on Seventh Heaven which I feel like everyone did a guest-star on Seventh Heaven it was on for like more than a decade. Jodie: I didn’t do a guest-star on Seventh Heaven. Beverley: The Olsen twins did! Did you know that?- Jodie: No I didn’t! Christine: We’ll try to make that work next time, I’m really sorry! Beverley: I won’t leave you out this time- Christine: Yeah! It’s like a weird sorority you know? You- we were always seeing each other at events, parties, Teen Choice Awards and charity events and it kinda’ becomes like your social life, you know? You see other child-actors and you’re in this very small world together which was pretty cool.
QUESTION ~ Who are you personally hoping that Hollywood Darlings connects with? Your 90’s fans? Or awakening the new generation of younger moms?
Beverley: I think both. What is really going bring people in is “Oh it’s my favorite 90’s stars and people that I grew up with.” But I think what is gonna’make people stay and what you some of the newer, younger generation moms are gonna’ find is that we’re incredibly relatable. And the basis of this show is friendship.
Jodie: Yeah we definitely have this shared history together. We may have grown up in a very odd and sort of surreal way but at the end of the day like, I’m still cleaning up you know? Like when the when the dog pees inside... Beverley: I’m still changing diapers. Jodie:: I’m still doing laundry. I mean, last night I got home from a very long day and realized the laundry was still in the washer and I was like “I gotta’ get out of bed” I mean, our lives are not that much different. Beverley: The relatability will be able to connect with us. And also like, your relationships with your friends. So I think you can kind of look at any one of us and be like, “Oh, I’m kind of that of the group.” Beverley: You know? Um, like we do with the Golden Girls.
If you are looking for a new show to obsess over and were a huge fan of Beverly Mitchell, Jodie Sweetin and Christine Lakin growing up, then you will not want to miss Hollywood Darlings premiering Wednesday, April 12th at 8P/7c on Pop!!!

I've only seen fullhouse out of all these old shows. I read Jodi's book on her drug abuse, it was quite sad. Glad to see she is doing better.

I was a total Full House kid- TGIF in general was totally my jam! Oddly, I really didn't (and still don't) like Saved By The Bell. Not sure why, I guess it's just not my thing.

I love how well you have described the shows and the characters - I am sure this is so nostalgic for people. I sometimes watch parts of these shows, but I am rarely following - I have to binge watch them some day to get into them, I think. I spent most of my youth in another country, so most of these shows I am not familiar with, but you got me intrigued now.
