Let's face it, road trips with kids will never be an easy task. The days where we could pack an hour before leaving & still manage to get our luggage loaded, fill up on gas, grab a few snacks & down that pre-road trip breakfast since we were actually out of the house before breakfast cut-off. And still make it out of town on time. Long gone!
However, just because we now have an army of tiny humans dictating our road trips, it doesn't mean those trips need to be the nightmare our favorite sitcoms have us believing. With a little bit of planning on our part, those road trips can go rather smoothly! Here are a few Traveling With Kids tips, tricks & hacks to make your next road trip a little less stressful.
1. GoodNites®
I already know what you are thinking, your child is 5 and while yes, they have the occasional accident, they have been pretty much potty trained for a few years now.
I believe it! I have a 5 year old too. But accidents at night and on long road trips, they happen! Just like they do to many other 5 year olds. It’s completely normal and GoodNites are here for us to help make those road trips less messy!
GoodNites?
Never heard of GoodNites?
They will be a total game changer in your parenting game since they are used for transitioning from potty training to managing nighttime wetness! Your kiddo will wake up dry with the #1 NightTime Underwear, featuring double leg barriers to help prevent leaks and five layer protection to help keep kids dry all night.
GoodNites On Road Trips
Since GoodNites are phenomenal at keeping kids dry at night, just imagine the super powers they possess on those long road trips! Rest stop 20 miles ahead? You have a child that can’t hold their bladder for more than 5 minutes after saying “I need to go potty” ? Don’t stress too much mama, Goodnites are there to save the day and keep that booster seat nice and dry!
hoover over the photo above & purchase your GoodNites now.
Sam’s Club
Discover the best value on Huggies Diapers, Pants and Wipes for your growing family at one of my favorite places to shop, Sam’s Club. Yes, GoodNites are part of the Huggies family! By shopping at Sam’s Club, you will save time and money so you can spend more on moments with your own family.
One of my favorite perks of being a Sam’s Club member is the Sam's Club Pick-Up service! Living in a small town, not many stores have caught on to the store pick-up trend & being a busy mom on the go? Sam’s Club Pick-Up Service has saved the day many times! Isn’t it amazing that you can take advantage of Sam’s Clubs already low prices in the comfort of your own living room? Choose the store pickup option & your box of GoodNites will be waiting at your local Club when you have time to pick them up!
Shopping in person is more your thing? Just head to the diaper section of your local Sam’s Club and toss a box of GoodNites into your cart! The fabulous news is, whether you shop online or in person, you will get to enjoy instant savings on Huggies items!!!!
It get better too!!!!
Still not convinced? The new diaper chart will help illustrate the savings available at Sam's Club!!!! Huggies is a brand that moms can trust at a retailer that she can trust!
2. Take Jackets Off
If you’re traveling in the middle of winter, take your kids jackets off. It can get rather uncomfortable wearing a jacket for hours on end! A comfy kid, is a happy kid!
3. Dress In Layers
Mom, I’m hot! Mom, I’m cold! Kids love to go back and forth!!!! Save yourself the headache and dress them in layers. Hot? Unzip that hoodie. Cold? Put it back on!
4. Bathroom Caddy
Place items your kid asks for, in one location. The bathroom caddy! My daughter is always hungry! She’s always thirsty. She’s always bored! So I keep all those items and a few GoodNites handy for those rest stop breaks all in one central place, her bathroom caddy!
5. Mini Plastic Cereal Bins
I’m not sure about your child, but mine makes messes 24/7! A great way to avoid vacuuming your car floor is placing snacks in a mini plastic cereal bin! They can drop the thing as many times as they like and all the crumbs stay inside that bin!
The mini plastic cereal bins also fit right into that bathroom caddy! Your kid can just open the lid and snack away, mess free!
6. Baking Sheets!
Yes, you read that correctly. Baking Sheets! Baking Sheets make the best travel tables!!! Your kid can now do all those table top activities they do at home, in the car! Plus, those bathroom caddy’s just happen to be perfect size to place on top of those baking sheet “tables”.
7. Tablets
This tip is really a no-brained, but remember to bring those tablets!!!! Download as many free apps as possible and your child will be entertained for hours!!!
8. Chargers & Headphones
Don’t forget to pack those chargers!!!! Nothing worse than having to buy a new one at a gas station at a ridiculously high price because you forgot your charger at home. Headphones will also save your own ears from whatever background music your child’s tablet is blasting!
9. Cheap Coloring Books
I love stocking up on cheap coloring books when we travel!!!! When those tablets die, Coloring books make a great entertainment backup!! Those baking sheet tables will also once again come in handy once the crayons come out.
10. Pack Your Kids Least Favorite Drink
This little tip will save you a few potty breaks. If you pack your kids favorite juice, they will chug and chug and pee and pee! I know we have GoodNites for backup, but the less we need to use them, the better. Pack your child’s least favorite drink, that way they are only sipping away when they are thirsty and not because they are bored!
11. Seat Back Car Organizers
Bring even more kiddo entertainment, without taking up that valuable space by snapping a seat back car organizer in your car! Let your child load it with their favorite toys for hours and hours of fun!!!

My kid is 1.5 so we don't go for long road trips. Oh and the diapers are still in full capacity in this house, lol!

goodnites are a lifesaver! my daughter with high-functioning autism wears them 24/7 because she won’t tell me that she needs to go until she needs to go in the next 2 minutes. although she is 15, the size l/xl fit her perfectly. For her twin sister (who doesn’t have autism) she sometimes asks me if she could wear one too so we don’t end up taking as many rest stops. For our trips with a lot of traffic i even slip one on! They are super comfertable and leak free even on an adult (130lbs).

De la France Yes absolutely i think you should start putting your 11 year old son in diapers on long road trips just so he's dry and comfortable while he's traveling in the car.

Omg you're a genius! Used them for my 7 yr old daughter on a long trip to my sister's ... They were great! Thought there was going to be a debate on how she's a big girl but she had no problems wearing and using the goodnites!!! Everyone listen to her ... Goodnites WORK!!!

Agreed. Great idea's for sure. My 8 year old still wears Goodnites during the day anytime we go somewhere. They keep her more relaxed and make our trip much easier with not having to try to find a bathroom all the time. She loves Apple Juice and playing on her tablet. Diapers are a tool and made in all sizes for good reason.

Bryan K. Porter oh wow good job mate i bet your 8 year old daughter gets excited when it's diaper time. Now you got diapers it's time she started to feel more like a toddler again by wearing size 18 to 24 month old clothes, drinking formula milk from a baby bottle, sleeping in a crib, sitting in a high chair wearing a bib, sucking on a pacifier and travelling in a rear facing car and going to daycare in a stroller.

Well, I don't know about the baby stuff? She is 8 and about to get into the large size goodnites. thankfully they now make them all the way up to teenage now. The new XL Goodnites with a booster will work well for her for many years to come unless she gets fat! :)

Do you let your daughter poop in the goodnites? I’m just wondering because I’m thinking of trying goodnites with my daughter for a road trip.

Julie, I will answer this for my family. Normally she does not poop in them. They are not really made for that. If I know we are going to be away from a bathroom for a long period of time, I will put her in a regular normal diaper. She is 9 now so size 7 don't fit her. I keep a pack of Abina Youth in the house for special occasions.

I guess it would be messy; but if there is no other option I guess I could let her. I don't even want to imagine the clean-up. Mine is 5 so it is more of a precaution than a genuine need for Goodnites. But she still wets the bed and sleeps in the car so it's better safe than sorry.

Same with my daughter. She don't wear diapers to school but she is a bed wetter, and can't hold her bladder for long periods. when she has to go, it is now. So we let her wear diapers probably more than we should, but she don't seem to care and it saves us laundry and clean up. So long car rides, bus train etc. or even playing outside for long periods we let her just wear a goodnite or even a regular diaper.

Also, when you say “normally she does not poop” are there any exceptions to this? Would you let her if she was sick? Just because my daughter had a terrible stomach bug recently, and struggled to reach the toilet in time. Next time she gets a bug should I let her use her Goodnites?

When she is sick, she stays in regular diapers 24/7 until she is feeling better. Yes at that point she don't have to get out of bed at all for anything. I would never scold her for using her diaper if it is on even if she wasn't sick. Just she chooses not to poop in it which I support because it is so gross and messy. In my house, diapers are just underwear. If she is wearing one, she is free to use it. Again, I found Goodnites do not do well for a BM. She would be much better off using a real diaper like an Abina Youth...or xs size or even Northshore Megamax X-sm size. Those Megamax are not cheap, but She can wear them 12 hours and never leak at all. And she don't spare the drinks either. Loves her Apple juice, and Kool Aid.
